Hey, im thinking abort buying a synologi NAS. Im unsure if i should get the ds723+ because of the upgradability. Or if the ds224+ sould be enough for movie streaming. I have a 100mpb internet, and would be great to stream outside my house. I am also open for other brands but I dont thin all brands are easy to get in norway. I do really apriciate your help!

Thanks for reaching out! It sounds like you’re looking for a NAS solution that will handle movie streaming, particularly with Jellyfin, and that can support external streaming as well.
Synology DS723+ vs. DS224+:
DS723+: This model would be a great option if you want upgradability in the future. With its dual M.2 NVMe slots for caching and the ability to add a PCIe expansion card (such as a 10GbE card), the DS723+ offers more flexibility. It can handle higher demands and future expansion, such as adding more storage or improving network speed.
DS224+: This one would likely be sufficient for your streaming needs, especially if you’re not planning to add a lot of storage or upgrade the network speed in the future. It has a strong processor and should be capable of handling Jellyfin for streaming 1080p and 4K movies to devices inside and outside your home. However, it lacks the expansion slots and upgradeability options of the DS723+.
Given that you’re in Norway and have a budget of 600-1000 USD, I’d suggest focusing on the DS723+ if you're looking for something with better future-proofing and flexibility for things like network speed upgrades. However, if you’re trying to save a bit of money and don't expect major expansions soon, the DS224+ would be a solid option for Jellyfin and movie streaming.
Other Brands:
You might also want to look into brands like QNAP or Asustor, though availability may vary in Norway. They offer competitive options with similar specs, and in some cases, may even offer better value in terms of features or hardware.
For external streaming, make sure your internet upload speed is consistent, as streaming outside your home will depend on that. If you're on 100Mbps internet, that should generally be fine for 1080p and some 4K streaming, but the speed may limit higher bitrate 4K streaming depending on the content.
Drives:
A 2x8TB setup is a good choice for media storage and should give you ample space for movies, especially with Jellyfin, which can handle large video libraries efficiently. Synology drives like the Seagate IronWolf or WD Red are solid options for NAS storage.
