I am looking to get started in transitioning to a nas that supports apps to bring current cloud storage and activities in house. I do not have initial capital to purchase what I would like (Synology DS920+) or something equivalent. A system with 4 bays seems to be ideal but not sure I need to start there. Would purchasing a lesser system and then upgrading be viable (can disks be transferred from one Synology device to another or should I look into something like TerraMaster and make that work?

There are many people choosing DS920+ and filling it with only 2 or 3 drives so that they can expand later. But DS420+ is a dual-core model that would work very similar to a quad-core version that is made for more people to access or more apps to run in the background. You can easily migrate from one plus series model to another. So you could even consider older DS918+ or DS418play.If still available, they would still do a very good job.I hope this helps.
