PLEX/Jellyfin Server and Photos

#1
Hi good afternoon!

I'm looking for advice/suggestions on a turnkey NAS for a media server and photo back up and sharing. Would be maybe 3-6 users normally (max of 8-10 if everyone in the family is remote), hardware transcoding, current media storage with 4k and blu ray and photos combined is ~ 30 tb with approximately 10tb more to be added with what's around the house. Am not opposed to having remote users get direct play clients but hw transcoding is preferred just for remote access and quite a large 4k collection, am in the process of 2.5gb around the house where NAS will be. Am not too concerned about future proofing, as it will again be for personal media collection and photo storage of grandkids and nieces/nephews (only storage, no editing). A little bit concerned about expansion so would love 144tb as a minimum. I would describe myself as tech ignorant, rather than illiterate. No real background building PCs or repair, but have used vids/user guides. Thank you so much!

Thanks for reaching out. For what you’re planning, the QNAP TS-464 is the best fit. It’s part of QNAP’s 64 series, which offers an ideal balance of power, expansion, and ease of use for Plex and photo storage.

It has a fast Intel processor with integrated graphics for hardware transcoding, dual 2.5GbE ports for smooth 4K streaming around your home network, and support for M.2 NVMe SSDs if you ever want to add caching or a small SSD pool later. The system can handle multiple users, large 4K media libraries, and remote access without issue.

With four drive bays, it’s easy to start with a few drives now and expand later. Using RAID 5 will give you both speed and redundancy, and you can grow capacity over time up to 80TB or more.

If you want something that just works right out of the box with strong Plex performance and long-term flexibility, the QNAP TS-464 is the one to get.
