Backup Suggestions

#1
Good afternoon, I’m planning to replace a 4 TB drive with a 12 TB drive in my DS920 and would like to back up my files first, as you suggested.

I’m considering the Seagate Expansion Desktop 20 TB, but I’d appreciate your thoughts on this model versus the WD 20 TB Elements Desktop External Hard Drive or any other drive you’d recommend in a similar price range.

My main use for my NAS is as a Plex server for personal movie storage shared with my family.
Thanks in advance for your advice.

Both the Seagate Expansion Desktop 20 TB and the WD Elements 20 TB are solid choices for external backups, and for your use case either one will work perfectly fine. They use the same 3.5-inch drives you’d find in internal models, often Seagate Exos or WD Ultrastar units inside the enclosure.

Between the two, the WD Elements models tend to run a bit quieter and cooler, while the Seagate Expansion units usually offer slightly faster transfer speeds. For a Plex server backup where the drive won’t be plugged in 24/7, that small difference isn’t critical.

If your goal is simple and reliable full backups before swapping drives, go with whichever is the better price. If you plan to leave it connected permanently for scheduled backups, I’d give a small edge to the WD Elements because of its lower heat output.

Either way, you’ll have a good solution to safely back up your DS920 before upgrading the 4 TB drive.
