QNAP TS-464

#1
HI, Love your channel and have been watching for a very long time now - thank you.

Just bought a QNAP TS464 (I waited so long for the new models, bought it and they were announced a week later - typical!), anyhow, still going through your videos to setup properly (PLEX, Photos etc) but was thinking of getting some NVME SSD for caching.

I have 4 X 4TB HDD running RAID 5. I mainly use it for photo/video storage, watching videos and a small amount of video editing.

Is it worth me buying 2 X NVME cards (500GB) or upgrading the RAM from 8GB to 16GB or both?

Or, leaving it as it is as it will make no difference?

Many thanks in advance, David

Thanks for the kind words and for watching the channel — glad to hear the videos have been helping. The TS-464 is still an excellent NAS despite the newer models arriving, so you’ve made a solid choice.

For your workload (photo/video storage, Plex, light editing), upgrading RAM to 16GB will make a bigger difference than NVMe caching. Caching mainly helps with lots of small file reads/writes or multi-user access, not large media files like photos and videos.

If you’re mostly working with big files, you’ll see little benefit from two 500GB NVMe drives for cache. Instead, you could use one NVMe as an SSD volume for active projects and keep your HDD array for bulk storage and backups.
