TS-464-8G

#1
Hi Robbie
Is there a way of telling which ones (TS-464-8G) have the expandable memory... a code?
Looking at review/internet and indeed QNAP compare... it seems inconsistent.
Many thanks
Ben

Great content...
(Am looking to replace a MyCloudMirror inc 4 TB; was somewhat miffed about the speed the software/support was removed.
Mostly use for backup as this device is not great for file transfer but would like to be able to store/edit/ video as although laptop has 1TB I have a lot of drone footage to go through.
Also a few digital films it would be nice to cast/watch)

Thanks for your message and for the kind words about the content, much appreciated. You’ve hit on a good question about the TS-464-8G, and it’s one that confuses a lot of people because QNAP’s own documentation and comparison tools aren’t always clear.

The good news is that all QNAP TS-464 units, whether they come as 4GB or 8GB models, are physically identical and have two SODIMM slots. The only difference is what RAM they ship with from the factory. So even if you buy an 8GB model, it can still be upgraded later (unofficially) to 16GB or even 32GB by replacing the two SODIMMs.

There’s no separate code or model that indicates “expandable” because QNAP doesn’t officially support anything beyond the stated max, but there’s no hardware lock. Just make sure you get 260-pin DDR4 2666 or 3200MHz SODIMMs. Many users, myself included, have run these boxes with 32GB without issue.

For your use case — replacing the MyCloudMirror for backups, faster transfers, and a bit of video editing and media — the TS-464-8G is a great choice. It’s much more capable, and QNAP’s QTS software will give you a far better experience.
