Yes, you can physically move your two existing 6TB drives from the DS216play to the new DS925+, but there are a couple of key things to keep in mind — especially with Synology’s newer hardware and drive compatibility rules.
First, it’s important to note that migrating from a Value series NAS (like the DS216play) to a Plus series NAS (like the DS925+) will require reinitializing the drives. That means your drives will need to be formatted, and any existing data will be erased. Synology doesn’t support direct migration between those two tiers due to differences in hardware architecture and software handling. So, make sure everything is fully backed up before proceeding.
Second, regarding compatibility: the DS925+ enforces strict Synology-only drive support. That means:
• If your existing 6TB drives are not Synology-branded (e.g. Seagate or WD), DSM on the DS925+ may refuse to install or show persistent warnings.
• If your new additional drives are Synology models (HAT3300 or HAT5300 series), you still won’t be able to expand the volume unless all drives in the system are Synology-approved.
So, for a smooth setup and future expandability, it’s best to ensure all four drives in the DS925+ are from Synology’s supported list. I’d be happy to double-check compatibility if you can send over the model numbers of your current 6TB drives.
