M2 SSD for E10D20-T1

#1
Looking for the best cards that work this card, for use in a Synology 4017xs+

Many seem better/better priced than the Synology cards - What do you recommend?

You’re absolutely right that Synology’s branded M.2 SSDs (like the SNV3400 series) are solid but expensive, and there are definitely better-value options out there — as long as you’re aware of the compatibility limitations.

For the RS4017xs+ and the E10M20-T1 combo, the key is M.2 2280 NVMe drives, ideally with power loss protection (PLP) and high endurance, since Synology doesn’t officially allow using third-party SSDs for storage pools — only caching — unless you bypass drive validation.

Recommended SSDs (for caching use):
• Kingston DC1000B – Designed for caching, PLP included, excellent endurance, widely used in NAS.
• Samsung 980 PRO (with heatsinks) – High performance, good for read-heavy caching. No PLP, but reliable for most use cases.
• WD Red SN700 – NAS-optimized NVMe, decent endurance, solid compatibility track record.
• Seagate IronWolf 510 – Specifically aimed at NAS caching. Good balance of endurance and price.

If you’re sticking strictly to caching and not storage pool use, any of the above should work fine. Synology may still throw a warning on boot if it doesn’t detect a supported drive, but functionality won’t be blocked — the warning is just cosmetic.

Just make sure you’re using NVMe (not SATA) M.2 drives, and apply thermal pads or heatsinks if your editing workload is sustained — those drives can heat up fast in tight NAS enclosures.
