QNAP + Plex

Hi,

I just bought a new QNap 8 Bay, TVS-H874 i5. I have it set up with 2 data pools, 1 for NVME and the other for the 8 Bays. This seems to be all good.

I have watched your setup videos for Plex and the NAS multiple times and they are a great resource, thank you! I am confused about permissions with Plex, that is creating a restricted User on the NAS for Plex type content. I have tried this, mucked around but I am really not joining the dots.

- When you create a specific Plex account with restrictions, do you then login with that account and setup Plex? Should you not setup Plex on the Admin account?

- You the bind the Plex Pass account to the Plex user account?

I am also having issues with folder permissions, I can see the root Media folder but not the sub folders when creating a Library in Plex. Do I need to go to Advanced Folder Permissions to enable sub folders?

Setting up Plex with a restricted account:
You should initially set up Plex using your Admin account to get everything up and running. Once that's done, you can create a restricted user account for Plex. Afterward, you can adjust the permissions to restrict the Plex user to specific folders and resources, keeping your system secure.

Binding Plex Pass account:
If you're using Plex Pass, you can bind your Plex Pass to the restricted user account, but the Plex Pass features will be available across all users linked to your Plex server. You don't need to bind it directly to the restricted Plex user; just ensure your Plex server has the correct Plex Pass features activated.

Folder Permissions & Subfolders:
Regarding your issue with subfolders not showing up in Plex when creating a library, you do indeed need to ensure the Advanced Folder Permissions are set up correctly. If you only have access to the root media folder but not the subfolders, go into the Advanced Permissions and explicitly give the restricted user permission to access the subfolders. Plex will then be able to see all the content and organize it accordingly.

Once these permissions are set up correctly, Plex should work seamlessly with the restricted account, and you’ll be able to stream your content without issues.
