Overwhelmed by NAS options

#1
My Plex server is running off a dying PC and I want to go the NAS route. There is so many options for NAS on the market, that I'm overwhelmed by what to choose.
All I want to do is run Plex on my home telly, with the occasional use on my phone.
When I look up NAS options in my usual places to buy tech stuff. I get overwhelmed.
Synology, GNAP, Asustor all have so many different options that I just don't know what to choose.
In not after the best of the best. I'd prefer a budget option, but I also don't know what's going to last, and what's going to work efficiently for my use.

I totally get how overwhelming it can be with so many NAS options, especially when you're looking for something to run Plex efficiently. Since you’ll be streaming 1080p or possibly 4K content, it’s important to go with a NAS that has hardware transcoding capabilities.

For Plex streaming, you’ll want a NAS with a Celeron or Intel Core i-series processor, as these models offer hardware transcoding and can handle multiple streams smoothly. Here are some options that would suit your needs:

Synology DS423+

Price: Around $650 AUD
Why? The DS423+ features an Intel Celeron quad-core processor, perfect for 1080p and 4K transcoding. It also has 2GB RAM (expandable to 6GB) and runs Synology’s reliable DSM software, which makes it easy to manage your media. It’s a great option for Plex and home media streaming.
QNAP TS-464

Price: Around $700 AUD
Why? The TS-464 has an Intel Celeron quad-core processor with 4GB RAM (expandable), providing solid performance for multiple Plex streams. It’s a bit more future-proof if you plan to stream in 4K, and it has HDMI output for direct TV connection.
Both of these models feature hardware transcoding and will perform well with Plex. The DS423+ is a good choice for a Synology system, and the TS-464 is a solid QNAP option if you prefer their software. Either one should serve your needs well within your budget!
