TVS-h1688X replacement schedule

#1
I currently have a Synology DS3622xs+ but I am considering swapping to the QNAP TVS-h1688X. That said, the QNAP model was released several years ago and I wonder if a refresh is on the way. Any rumors?

I really like my Synology, but I do not want to stay locked into a brand and series that wants to try to force or coerce you to buy their overpriced branded drives and I would rather make the switch now than pay a terrible price later.

It's great to hear that you're considering the QNAP TVS-h1688X! It’s a solid option, and many people love it for its performance and expandability. Regarding your question about a potential refresh of the TVS-h1688X, there have been no official announcements yet, but QNAP typically updates their product lines every couple of years. Given the model's age, it’s possible they could release a newer version soon, but there hasn’t been any confirmed rumor as of now.

That said, the TVS-h1688X is still a strong option, especially if you're looking for a more open platform compared to Synology, which can sometimes push you towards their branded drives. With the QNAP TVS-h1688X, you have more flexibility in choosing your drives, which can save you a significant amount in the long run. Additionally, QNAP's hardware and software are top-notch for both home and business use, and their QTS OS is highly customizable.

If you decide to stick with the Synology DS3622xs+, you’re looking at a well-supported system with great features, but I completely understand wanting to avoid being locked into one brand. If you're looking for more options for NAS systems with good flexibility, you could also consider the QNAP TS-464 or TS-874 series, which offer robust performance and scalability, much like the TVS-h1688X but at a lower price point.

In terms of timing, if you don't urgently need the switch, it could be worth waiting a bit to see if QNAP drops a new version, but I’d say the TVS-h1688X is still a solid choice for now.
