Hi - have an old 2 bay Synology. Has served me well. Time to expand though - need a 4 bay for storage only. Going to run my own OS (TrueNAS, Unraid, something like that). Just need storage and fast networking. Thinking Terramaster F4-424. Is that what you would recommend?

Hey! Sounds like you're ready to take a step up in your NAS game! Moving from a 2-bay to a 4-bay setup is a great way to expand your storage capabilities, especially if you’re planning on running TrueNAS or Unraid.
The Terramaster F4-424 is actually a solid choice for what you’re looking to do. It offers good value for money, supports 10GbE networking, and is compatible with TrueNAS and Unraid, so it should fit right into your setup. It's a budget-friendly option that doesn’t skimp on the essential features, which seems to align well with your under $500 budget.
Given that you're looking for storage and fast networking, the F4-424's dual 2.5GbE ports should give you a nice speed boost over standard Gigabit Ethernet, especially for file transfers and media streaming within your network. This is a great middle-ground if you're not ready to invest in full 10GbE infrastructure but still want more speed.
