  Synology RS1219+ RAM Upgrade Question?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I'm preparing to upgrade the NAS I requested for my workplace, and I have the doubt if I can install ECC RAM on it. It's a Synology RS1219+ and while Intel (https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/77981/intel-atom-processor-c2538-2m-cache-2-40-ghz.html) lists the server as ECC-compatible, I've yet to see any comments on actually installing ECC memory to this NAS (like 2 x CT102472BF160B).

Also, I want to add a 10GbE card like the Intel Intel X540T2, but heard on another video guide that another intel card failed to work on this server. Is it possible to use?

Thanks!

  Ds718+ vs ds220+?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi

What to choose between the older 718+ or the newer 220+ the price is for 718+ is about 20£ cheaper than 220+.

Use the Nas mostly for Plex, but is will try some more things like docker, don't know much about it yet, but plan to use Nas tougheter with smart devices around home also.

What nas is for my situaction ?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hy man,

first of all thanks for your videos on youtube and yoyur forum, you are very good and explicative !

i don't know nothing about nas Big Grin i'm studying nas from one week looking videos on youtube(...).
i want a security storage for my files. now i'm using 3 different hard disk(2tb each), but im scared to lose files (break of hard disk) and i would like to have it in cloud without having to use just icloud or google drive, but i would like to have all my files in a place that i can have phisically with me, and also in the cloud...so i thought about buying a NAS.
it will be used not just for me, but i hope that in the future it will be used for the medical clinic of my family, (i think it can be very userful also for them) so i was looking for something not basic (in italy we say "spend a lot 1 time, spend well&quotWink.

so like i hope you understood,(for now) i need a Nas just for storage of files and backups (i ll still use my hard disk for backups), and by keeping it on I'm gonna find out more and more functions that we might need.

i was looking on interent for some Nas, and i looked at one those two :
- Synology DS920+ 4 Bay Desktop NAS (573€, about 674dollars)
and
- TerraMaster F4-422 4-Bay 10GbE (550€ about 588 dollars).
that could be the choice
.
i repeat... i'm a noob so i'm sure you can help me about the decision (and giving me some advice about other Nas!!!)

i just read that nas of Qnap are harder to handle, so i didnt looked for them.
i saw your videos about Synology ds920+ and terramaster f4-422, and (with my ignorance), i understood that maybe terramaster is better for the 10gbe, but synology is better for the processor (???) i don't know, i will do everything you will recommend me Smile
thanks for your answer, thanks for this forum and for everything

have a good life and greetings from Italy

(sorry for my english, i hope you can understand my question)

Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hello, I would like to know if i can host a server on a Nas, which would be a wordpress theme, e commerce gallery. Which one would be the best option for a low budget but which can hold users for e commerce.

  Virtualization NAS?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi I've been looking to build a virtualization server for home use to better my studies with
- docker
- kubernetes
- vmware
- linux
- windows server
- plex usage on the side

the current build I've been considering is the following (prices based on ebay as of 03/25/2021)
2650L v3 x2 ($85 per cpu or $170)

supermicro X10DRW-i ($175)
or
supermicro X10DAL-i ($175)
or
any suggested motherboard for dual cpu

RAM
Samsung 8gb M393A1G40DB0-CPB PC4-2133P DDR4 ECC ($100 per 4 sticks of ram, would buy 2 sets so $200)

PSU
evga supernova 550w (91) or any suggested PSU, this part im not to knowledgeable on

GPU
optional, If I ever upgrade my main pc for work then I will take the 1080 from there and potentially put it in this pc. Otherwise a 1060 assuming one of my friends has / is willing to part with theirs.

HDD
seagate surveillance hdd 4TB 7200rpm (free)

Case
any suggested.

Thanks,
Gregory Maxwell Meyers

  Back up emails (gmail)?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi dear NAS experts,
I’ve got my new DS220+ a couple of days ago. As a total newbie to the world of backups and Synology I’m getting a bit overwhelmed when I see the many apps offered to the user in the Synology download center.
I wanted to back up mostly all my gmail emails. My first attempt: Active Backup for G Suite. I haven’t make it further than the first screen on the assistant. There I’m asked about a “domain for backup”. What is this or where do I find this in my Synology control panel/setup?
Later on after searching on more information about this topic I noticed there is another Synology app called Cloud Sync. So what is the difference with Active Backup? I think a sync is more convenient to me as once I get to download my emails to the NAS I will surely purge a lot of junk and I’d like to mirror this changes back to gmail.
Have you perhaps already written any article on the topic “CloudSync vs. Active Backup”?
(My next cloud based backup after gmail will be Office 365)
Thanks in advance for your help!

  RAM upgrade?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Thanks for the RAM upgrade article. EXCELLENT!
I have a DS720+
Just bought Crucial 16GB Single DDR4 2666 MT/s (PC4-21300) DR X8 SODIMM 260-Pin Memory - CT16G4SFD8266 as recommended. I should have it in a week.

Then I watched your video and saw you pairing 2 x8GB modules. Is it ok for me to install this 16GB module and keep the original 2GB ram in the unit or do I have to replace the 2GB with 16GB or will it not work and I need 2x16GB or 2x8GB modules to make it work.
Thanks

  QNAP 253D?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (3)

Hi Robbie

I was referred to you by a guy from QNAP yesterday. I want to buy a NAS but don't have a huge budget. I asked him about the expansion capabilities of the QNAP x53D series and he suggested that I talk to you as the more informed NAS expert.

I am a new YouTuber and want to eventually edit on FCP from a NAS, but can't afford a Thunderbolt machine. The guy from QNAP was unsure if it's possible to update the X53D series to 10GB.

I'd really appreciate your help. If you are available on the phone, I could talk on the phone, if that's easier for you. My number is 07525161198.

Many thanks in advance.

Victor
