Can a NAS run my plex server?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I have a custom built PC which has a broken motherboard that I was mainly using for Plex. It was built 12 years ago with a first gen i7 6 core and a GTX470 GPU. It has served me fine for what I have wanted though at times it struggled with top 4k files.

I am the main user and can direct play to my 4k samsung tv. However remote use of IOS and family use it so transcoding needs to be considered. I would rather have a NAS running in the background for Plex, radarr and sonarr etc than a PC which wouldn't be used for anything... therefore headless would be better and more power efficient.

My concern though is no NAS I have seen is capable of the capacity and I don't think there are any I can put a GPU in to over come the transcoding issue. Overall CPU seems fine its just graphics power I think they lack. Could you help advise if there is a NAS or would a custom server be better with GPU and SATA backbone?

Thanks,
Edward

  Best nas for Plex remote?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Was looking at the tvs-h1288x. Looking for something my family of 5 can use with good remote use. Sometimes 2 or 3 members of the family will remote stream. Trying to find a good nas that can plex transcode up to 4 connections to be safe.

  2 x DS1821+?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi,

I'm loving the site & the youtube channel! It's invaluable for non-specialists like myself so please keep it up!

I'm looking to consolidate a couple of old DS1812+ (16TB each) along with a pile of external G-Technology hard drives into a new larger NAS.
By rough estimate I currently need approx. 64TB of storage (plus the same as backup) with room to grow into so am looking at 128TB options.
My use case is 3d animation/rendering where the NAS would house everything. I have around 10 render nodes which would be accessing the NAS for source files & saving rendered images to. I plan to connect my editing workstation (HP Z820) directly to the NAS over 10GBe.

So, to my questions:

1. Is there a better option for this than the DS1821+?
2. For backup I plan to run a 2nd DS1821+ for the reason that if the main unit goes down, the backup can just take over. Is this idea reasonable?
3. As I plan to run 2 identical units, is there any downside to using RAID 0? I could do with the extra space & hopefully a bit more speed. Am I missing something here?
4. I've found a good deal for a unit including Seagate Exos x16 disks - would you recommend these disks in my case?
5. From what I've read, the NVMe cache wouldn't really help my use case - is that correct?

Many thanks in advance!

Kind regards

  NAS OS location?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi,
I found your website completely by chance and started to read as much as I can :-)
I am impressed, big thank you !
I have a small question but first I need to say that I am a real average person with not in depth knowledge in NASes.
A few years ago I managed to set up a NAS on my own, using OMV and various salvaged bits and pieces from old computers.
And it works(!) albeit not blazingly fast.
One thing I remember setting up my box -and it was really important for me- was that PMV required its own disk or at least (of course) its own partition.
Having the OS completely apart from my two mirrored data disks on a separate disk was/is of great value for me.
So now my questions:
With all those nice Synology/Qnap/Terramaster/etc NASes, where is the respective OS installed ?
Is it installed on the data disk? Or maybe on an SD card or USB thumb drive?
I want to buy one of these nice things (I like the QNAP TS-453Be) but I really don't want the OS to share physical space with my data disks.
Many thanks for your fantastic work
Kind regards
Michael

Small Business + plex nas advice?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi,
I love your content, thank you! I am brand new to the world of NAS storage and find the whole area quite confusing. I am sure you have answered my question many times over so my deepest apologies if you have.

I am looking for an 8 bay desktop-style NAS enclosure only right now, for as close to the £1000 mark as possible with the intention of buying 10tb or above drives as I need them to populate the bays in the coming weeks or months

I work from home running a company called Wylies Outdoor World, here is our web link if you are interested https://wyliesoutdoorworld.com/

I am needing a NAS system to share files between my team both locally and remotely. These files can be anything from pictures, documents all the way up to 4k video files.

We are still quite new to YouTube but focusing and investing heavily this year in growing our YouTube with our camping, bushcraft tutorials, product reviews and will be touring the UK filming in 4k.

All our files will be held on the nas, But I also use plex as my home media server, which I do watch from my mobile device on cold nights on camping trips.

at the moment all these files are held on my main editing pc, it works like a dream but sharing is problematic I find with other users out of my network .

if you could point me to a qnap or Synology enclosed that will do these jobs I would be really gratfull

  QNAP TVS-872XT?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I'm running a plex server for my family off of my TVS-872XT and am getting towards the point where more and more family members are being added and watching concurrently.

I am planning to max out my RAM, but wanted to see what the best CPU upgrade was that would work?

Thanks!
Ethan

I need a recommendation for a UPS to gracefully shutdown my new DS920+

The articles I can find are all several years old and the product links are out of date,
