What is the most cost affective Nas for playing Steam games from? I have wifi6 and 10gb network already but will only use this to game from and do not want to spend a ton but want fast gaming from it.
If another NAS higherend $800-1400 can do everything and game from as well let me know. I have up to 4 people who may connect to it at one time.

DS918+ RAM upgrade? |

Hi, I'm writing from Italy so English is not my first language, I hope that the description and my questions down below will be clear enough.
I follow your YouTube channel and that helped me a lot during the choice of which NAS to buy for my home. I finally chosen the Synology DS918+ with 4x4TB WD RED HDDs.
I'm now in the process of upgrading the RAM from the standard 4GB. I know that both Intel and Synology recommends max 8GB for this type of CPU, but then I watched your video and read your article about upgrading it up to 16GB.
I surfed the web to study other users experiences and seems that this unofficial upgrade works with no issues.
I'm not a real tech guy about RAM, motherboard, etc., this is why I'm writing to you.
Reading you article I understood that DS918+ runs with a standard 1866 MT/s instead of a 1600 MT/s, so my questions are:
- is this unofficial upgrade a "kind-of-safe" upgrade not threatening my data, my HDDs and the NAS itself?
- should point to a 1866 vs 1600 for max compatibility and reliability in my home environment?
- I found these two 16GB kits (2x8GB) but I cannot see if there're any difference between them: CT2K102464BF186D or CT2K8G3S186DM
Thanks in advance for your help, and keep doing your videos as they're very informative and well done.
If you have any sponsored link, that ships to Italy where to buy the RAM kit, I'll be more than happy to buy there to support your great work.
Thanks and best regards

DS918+ vs DS1019+? |

What would be a better buy? I’m considering DS918+ vs DS1019 or maybe RS819.
I want to be able to manage my NAS as a domain controller, surveillance cameras backup plus backup for computers and use at a shared files server.
DS1019+ is the newer model vs 918+ but with one extra bay and I think more memory.
RS819 is rack mount and would love to get that one because I have a rack at my house but I think the services that can provide is far less than my other two options.
My total number of users will be from 1 to 7 plus the surveillance camera (8)
Thank you

Which RAID? |

Hi, I LOVE your videos! Great job.
I've watched 2-3 of your videos on RAID levels and read the article and you never say which one is the best. I know you are going to ask me about my use case (home entertainment and file storage) but my question is disregarding use cases which RAID is best when you consider all factors? Which RAID do you use?
Thanks,
Andrew

Hi
I have the opportunity of purchasing a used TVS 872XT 16gb, my question is the NAS is supplied with 4 x 10tb skyhawk drives. I have the option of replacing them with 7 x 4tb Iron wolf drives. All hardware is less than 1-1.5 years old.. Price with either drive option is 1300 GBP.
Also their is an option of a 500gb M2 for 50 GBP. Ill be using it for PLEX, cloud and maybe VMs. Would it be worth it.
All the above is an upgrade to an home built N54L 4tb WD reds x4 running xpenology (5yrs old)
Regards Paul
Great you tube Channel, keep up the good work

Which NAS to buy? |

Hi Rob,
First I'd like to thank you for sharing all the great info on this website. I currently use a 8 years old Buffalo Linkstation 2-bay NAS (2x 2TB, RAID1) and would like to move to a new 4-bay one, initially fill it with 2x 8TB disks, using the LS afterwards for external backups.
As an owner of both an iOS and Android phone (preferring iOS), I limited my scope to Synology NAS', as the DSM apparently is more user-friendly and "iOS alike". I'd like use the NAS for storing and managing my huge amount of fotos, music and video files. I therefore think that the DS918+ should perfectly fit my needs. Following my questions:
- as I'm not in a total rush, should I wait until Synology releases new 2020 models?
- is the DS918+ an overkill for my needs, means a DS419 would be more than enough?
- does the DSM have a functionality to automatically backup (selected files/folders) on my existing LS (RAID 0)?
- I currently organise my fotos in a folder structure like YEAR > MONTHS > DAY. Can I keep that structure but also make use of the additional functions offered by a photo app with e.g. face recognition, without changing that structure?
- how can I protect a NAS system against viruses and hacker attacks? Is there a kind of firewall installed or can be installed?
- what NAS HDD has currently the best price per TB ratio (8TB or even more)?
Thanks a lot.
Best regards,
Andreas
