  Buying a Nas system?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I’m Looking for some advice before I go purchase my Nas system to run my Plex Pass and Home Surveillance System witch I will buy after. Looking to record all 4 cameras on the nas. I’m looking to buy Synology DS418play at $599.99. I’m going to use 4 Seagate IronWolf Pro nas ST6000NE000 6TB 7200 RPM 256MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drives at $289.99. x 4 = $1,159.96 It comes with 2GB DDR3-1866 memory, which I plan on adding a Synology RAM DDR3L-1866 SO-DIMM 4GB (D3NS1866L-4G) sat $119.96 to make 6GB. Will this all run fast and work or do I need more. After watching lots of your videos am going to use SHR. I am looking to add a Synology M.2 Adapter Card (M2D18). I see online that using ssd to run my caching and transcoding will keep my system from bottle necking and buffering a lot. Or can I use an external 2tg hard drive to run the metadata / thumbnails. I’m not a tech guy at all, anything I learned here was from watching your videos. (Witch are great, and much appreciated.) I’m looking to spend $2,000.00 and need it to last for a long time. Thanks for any advice. Tim.

  Thank You!?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Have a DS212+ that I'm growing very impatient with and very much appreciate your informative reasoned thoughts even when understanably speculative.

btw: I'm probably going to wait for DSM 7 (DS22x+), not for what it can do when released, which probably would work with a DS218+, but for what it may be able to do in 6 years that a 218+ may not be able to do. Plex and other apps won't run anymore on my 212+.

Also, I have been unable to find meaningful information on performance, even from Synology on the difference in a 218+ vs a 212+. I see hardward specs, but what I want to know is when I open something like file manager, will I still have time to go get a cup of coffee or will there be a maeingful, not incremental, improvement.

Again, thank you.

Is DS120j for Cloud Sync enough ?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Is DS120j enough powerful to use Cloud Sync without any issues or limitations ? My main goal would be to use the NAS to access my files like an external drive connected to a router and also to do the sync job without having to let my laptop running all day long. I wonder if the more powerful DS220j would be a better choice but I don't think I will use any Raid levels.

What is "Maximum number of files carried" ? Is it the maximum number of files I can move/copy/cut at a time ?

Looking for after-market 10gbe solutions to use a number of 8TB drives I have. Confusing is which models have 10gbe default as opposed to via an upgrade.

Is there a QNAP/ Synology app/shortcut to just download all the iCloud photos at once?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hello,

I have a QNAP TS-453BT3 and I am trying to download all of my wife's photos on to my QNAP.

Currently she has 30,000 photos on her iCloud, but iCloud only allows me to download 1,000 at a time, which is taking a VERY long time.

is there a QNAP app/short cut to just download all the photos at once?

Ideally, I would download it the evening before then wake up and organize them all the next morning.

Thanks!

4K editing over WiFi - DAS connected to wifi 6 router?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Video/Photo Editing - Replies (2)

Hi!

I'm trying to figure out a storage solution that would be easily accessible no matter where I'm located. It makes sense to go for a NAS, but I'm interested if a DAS with a good router could be an option. I'm very interested in having a wireless connection at home that would be capable of editing 4k video straight off of wifi. I'm hoping maybe wifi 6 could work here? I really just started searching for information and there's a lot of factors and limitations that I don't understand yet. That's the reason why I'm writing.

Thinking about if pairing Terramaster D5 with Asus rt-ax89x router could work to achieve this?

Best wishes,
Jonas
