8 Bay DAS Enclosure?

#1
Hi Rob,

I'm a fan of your work. I think you're doing a great job. You just cut through all the marketing speakers and deliver the facts. You seem to be in tune with the NAS industry so I have a question for you. I'm currently looking for an 8 Bay USB enclosure with Hardware Raid and USB C (10gbs or more). It's gonna connect to a Windows PC. I have done some searching about on the web but so far the information I get is quite confusing. Please give me some advice.

There are a few options. There is a more expensive Promise Pegasus32 8-bay and cheaper Areca ARC-8050T3. Both featuring hardware RAID which speeds up things. You can connect them via Thunderbolt 40GbE or USB 10GbE. It is compatible with both Mac and Windows systems. The model that supports SAS drives would allow these faster drives inside. But you would only notice a difference if you connect via Thunderbolt. Using the USB connection will be a bottleneck since the drive array will be faster then 10Gbit/s. Regular SATA drives would be a cheaper choice.SSD would be surely the fastest in any aspect, but they come with a price.I hope this helps.
