I'm looking to buy ds1522+ during Amazon prime day. But wanted to know if can mix ssd and hdd in the box. I want to use ssd for photo editing and hdd for storage. Can ds1522+ handle this or should I be looking at something else?

Yes, you can create two separate RAID/volumes. Synology allows that.
