External USB drive for off site backup of NAS - Steve Hight - 04-04-2023 Hi, I am looking to purchase a backup disk for my recently purchased DS920+ NAS - specifically for off-site backup. I am finding it hard to identify whether any USB storage will work with the Synology DS920+, or whether I need something special. External drives indicate whether they work with Windows and MAC, but not Synology. Can you tell me, are all the following devices suitable to use with the Synology DS920+ for external backup? 1. WD 4TB My Passport Ultra Portable HDD 2. WD 5TB My Passport Ultra Portable HDD ** 3. WD My Passport Ultra for Mac 4. WD My Passport Portable Hard Drive 5. WD My Passport for Mac Portable Hard Drive 6. Seagate Basics 4 TB Desktop External Hard Drive - USB3.0 7. Seagate Portable Drive, 4TB, External Hard Drive 8. SEAGATE One Touch Portable Hard Drive - 5 TB 9. Toshiba Canvio Partner 4TB Portable 2.5" External HDD, USB 3.2 Gen 1 Is there something else that I should be considering? RE: External USB drive for off site backup of NAS - ed - 04-05-2023 Yes, all of the external hard drives you have listed should be compatible with the Synology DS920+ for external backup. The DS920+ supports USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 external hard drives, so any USB hard drive with those specifications should work. In terms of other considerations, you may want to consider the durability, size, and price of the hard drive you choose. If you plan on transporting the hard drive frequently, you may want to choose a more durable option. If you need a lot of storage space, you may want to choose a higher capacity hard drive. Additionally, you should consider the price of the hard drive and choose an option that fits within your budget. I bought the "WD 5TB My Passport Ultra Portable HDD", formatted it as exfat, and backups to it are working as desired. I can also see the backed up data using Windows HyperBackupExplorer. Thank you for your advice. Steve |
