m.2 SATA/PCIE SSD? - Enquiries - 02-17-2023

Been a Mac user for over 10 years. Haven't replaced a hard drive since 2014. Purchased a Mini industrial computer equipped with Kaby Lake R i7 8550U Processor, 1.80 GHz(up to 4.0 GHz), 8 MB cache, 4 Cores 8 Threads, for personal, home use. Media, movies, music. Board allows for mSATA SSD Slot, 3.0 and 2.5 HDD or SSD 3.0 and a m.2 SATA/PCIE SSD. Was looking at the Samsung 970 EVO Plus SSD 2TB NVMe M.2 and the SAMSUNG 980 PRO SSD 2TB PCIe NVMe Gen 4 Gaming M.2Woud either one of these be a good fit? One TB would probably be enough though.

Both the Samsung 970 EVO Plus SSD and the Samsung 980 PRO SSD are high-performance NVMe M.2 drives, and both would be a good fit for your Mini industrial computer. However, there are some differences between the two that you should consider when making your decision.

The Samsung 970 EVO Plus SSD is a PCIe Gen 3.0 drive, while the Samsung 980 PRO SSD is a PCIe Gen 4.0 drive. This means that the 980 PRO has the potential for faster performance, but only if your motherboard supports PCIe Gen 4.0. If your motherboard only supports PCIe Gen 3.0, then the 970 EVO Plus will offer similar performance.

Another consideration is the capacity of the drive. You mentioned that 1TB would probably be enough for your needs, and that would be a good choice if you're looking to save some money. However, if you want the extra capacity for media, movies, and music, then the 2TB version of either drive would be a good choice.

Overall, both the Samsung 970 EVO Plus SSD and the Samsung 980 PRO SSD are excellent choices for a high-performance NVMe M.2 drive. If your motherboard supports PCIe Gen 4.0 and you're willing to spend a little extra, then the 980 PRO may offer slightly faster performance. However, if you want to save some money or your motherboard only supports PCIe Gen 3.0, then the 970 EVO Plus will still provide excellent performance.

Gen4 SSD is faster and should work. But if you have gen3 slot on a laptop, you will not take advantage of speed.
