Synology Diskstation DS3622xs+ NAS - Enquiries - 11-29-2022 Hello there, We as a small video production company want to upgrade our existing 10GbE Network with a centralized NAS to serve as a footage server for our running projects. Up to 10 workstations should flawlessly be able to edit/copy/paste our 4k ProRes 422 HQ footage. A desktop solution like the DS3622xs+ NAS would be ideal. Upgraded with with 2x16GB RAM and a 2x25GbE extension card and 2,5" SSD cache (due to missing M.2 slot). Because of budget, we consider HDDs for now and upgrade to SSD later (or not?). Would this configuration be sufficient enough for our needs? Does SSD cache make a huge difference for video editing, or even outbrake us? Thanks in regard, Martin Konrad RE: Synology Diskstation DS3622xs+ NAS - ed - 11-30-2022 Yes, this is a perfect solution for your purpose. It is the most popular Synology desktop model. Nvme caching is beneficial for video editing and multi-user environments. It improves HDD RAID performance. Normally IOPS on HDDs are much slower. So are the data transfer speeds. Caching allows data to be first stored on SSD and then moved to HDDs. Read cache also will improve the performance by storing the most frequently accessed data on SSD. When choosing NVMe for caching you need to look at reliability ratings such as DWPD/MTBF. Here are a few on the list https://nascompares.com/answer/nvme-m-2-list-with-endurance-dwpd-mtbf/ Caching means a lot of read-and-write operations, unlike regular storage situations. You would need to look at models with 0.5DWPD and above 970 pro – 0.66DWPD Synology SNV3400 – 0.68DWPD Seagate FireCuda 510 – 0.7 DWPD Seagate IronWolf 525 – 0.7 DWPD Seagate Firecuda 530 – 0.7 DWPD Seagate PS5 Game drive – 0.7 DWPD Seagate FireCuda 520 -0.9 DWPD WD Red SN700 – 1.0DWPD I hope this helps. |
