NAS upgrade / RAM - Enquiries - 11-03-2022 Hello, I came across your YouTube channel, and it has been a great source of knowledge -thank you for sharing your time and knowledge on there. You mentioned in your videos to contact you with regards to getting some advice... I am looking to upgrade my DS1513+ to a DS1522+ (or a DS1621+). As well as hosting my source files I want to be able to run docker images on it (about 10 initially). The DS1522+ come with 8gb memory on it and I was thinking of expanding that to 16gb by getting another RAM module -as well as adding some NVMe SSD drives for the Cache. Some questions... 1. Which is the best third-party RAM that works with the DS1522+? (I thought maybe the Kingston ECC 8gb -but it links to Crucial RAM instead) 2. Can I mix the memory -or should I get 2 x 8gb that are from the same brand ? 3. I was thinking of getting a couple of WD Red SN700 1tb (raid1) for the cache -would you recommend them -as well as the size? Thanks in advance for your help. Pete RE: NAS upgrade / RAM - ed - 11-07-2022 Yes, Crucial memory seems to be the most reliable. With Docker you may need to stay with ECC type of memory for reliability. https://nascompares.com/ram/ds1522-compatible-ram-upgrade/ When choosing NVMe for caching you need to look at reliability ratings such as DWPD/MTBF. Here are a few on the list https://nascompares.com/answer/nvme-m-2-list-with-endurance-dwpd-mtbf/ Caching means a lot of read and write operations, unlike regular storage situation. You would need to look at models with 0.5DWPD and above 970 pro – 0.66DWPD Synology SNV3400 – 0.68DWPD Seagate FireCuda 510 – 0.7 DWPD Seagate IronWolf 525 – 0.7 DWPD Seagate Firecuda 530 – 0.7 DWPD Seagate PS5 Game drive – 0.7 DWPD Seagate FireCuda 520 -0.9 DWPD WD Red SN700 – 1.0DWPD I hope this helps. |
