Synology DS220j - Plex - Sonos - Mac? - Enquiries - 02-28-2020

I presently use Sonos as my sound system. I have music files (70GB) stored on a WD My Passport drive (1TB) attached to a MacBook Air via USB. On the MacBook Air, I have installed Plex to catalog and serve my music files. Everything works well except, of course, I am unable to shut down the MacBook when wishing to play music stored on the WD drive. Additionally, I back-up files to an Airport Time Capsule (2TB) attached to a Synology RT2600ac router.

I would like be able to shut down the MacBook and still use Sonos and Plex to access and play music files. With this in mind, my plan is to purchase and connect a Synology NAS to the Synology router; then use the NAS to 1) store my music library, 2) install Plex, 3) primarily operate Plex using an iPhone as the Sonos controller and 4) replace the Time Capsule for backing up my MacBook. My plan does not include storing and streaming video.

First first question is whether or not the above configuration the makes good sense? If so, my second is whether or not a Synology DS220j with 2 Seagate 8TB Ironwolf drives (Raid 1) is an adequate NAS choice? If not, then what Synology NAS do you recommend? Thank you very much, SS

Synology J series is painfully slow. I would rather suggest DS220+ but if it seems too expensive then at least DS218play.Having all of these things running in the background will require some performance and plus series NAS can be upgraded with extra RAM if you need to speed it up at a later stage.I hope this helps.
