Synology NAS Advice - Enquiries - 12-18-2025

Dear Nascompares Team,
I need your advice, requirements are: Home NAS 2 users (couples), using SSD-only. Daily use 08:00–00:00, using it for file storage, I only play 1080p movies on Plex, Windows map network drive, no ethernet cable, all via wifi.

Prior issue: bought DS923+ (12/2023) with buzzing/coil whine from rear at power-on, which happened after almost 2 years; replacement under warranty DS923+ was worse than the one I had, coil whining louder; returned and requested refund. Tests done: fan speed changes, different sockets/rooms, stopped fans, nodrive installed, noise persisted, confirmed coil whine.

Needs: low risk of coil whine, quiet operation, long-term DSM/security support, minimal setup friction (prefer QuickConnect). Please recommend a suitable NAS for my needs. Preferably, avoid the coil whine issue.
Thank you in advance
Kind regards,
Hamza

Given your experience with coil whine on the DS923 plus, a move to the Intel based models is a very good idea. In your situation the Synology DS425 plus would be an excellent fit. It is quiet, efficient, has a long support window, and works perfectly with SATA SSDs for an all flash setup. It also avoids the Ryzen platform that seems to be linked to coil noise reports on a small number of DS923 plus units.

The DS425 plus has more than enough power for 1080p Plex, smooth file access, and daily use over WiFi. With your 4 x 2TB SSDs it will run cool and silent, and QuickConnect setup is as simple as what you had before.
