Cache on Ugreen DXP4800 Plus - Enquiries - 12-11-2025

WOW! Just watched your “What is SSD Caching and Should You Bother On Your NAS?” video from four years ago and it remains applicable today, thanks. I am setting up a DXP4800 Plus and have two 2T 990 Pro SSDs. I am a home user with a small business. I am debating on the SSD setup. I am even thinking about using the SSDs as a volume for quick access with some sort of automatic syn to the main hard drives. I am far away from being knowledgeable in this field and would appreciate your input.

You have two main paths.

First, use the SSDs as read and write cache for the main 12TB hard drive volume. This improves general responsiveness, speeds up repeated reads, and can help with small file work. It is the easiest option because the system manages everything and you do not have to move data manually. The downside is that heavy work with large media files will not gain as much.

Second, create a full SSD volume on the two 990 Pros. This is ideal if you want a fast workspace for active projects, business documents, or anything you open and edit often. You can then set up an automatic sync or scheduled copy from that SSD volume to the main hard drive volume. That gives you fast performance day to day with the safety of having the HDDs as the main long term storage. For many small business users this ends up being the nicest balance.

If your workload includes lots of small files, quick document access, or running apps, the SSD volume plus automatic sync is the most noticeable upgrade. If you mainly want smoother general use and do not want to manage two storage areas, go with cache.
