which Synology NAS - Enquiries - 11-24-2025

1. Nvidia Shield TV running Jellyfin
2. Unsure on which Synology NAS to choose. Wanting to stream from NAS to Shield movies up to 4gig. Either wireless or wired.

Would any Synology NAS work (I'm trying to get least expensive) as the Shield will do the heavy lifting with transcoding right?

Thanks, appreciate your advice.

Thanks for reaching out. If your Nvidia Shield is running Jellyfin and doing all the decoding locally, then yes, almost any Synology NAS can stream your files because the Shield handles the playback. The NAS only needs to deliver the file over the network, so no transcoding power is required on the NAS side.

For movie files around four gigabytes, even the very low cost Synology models such as the DS223 or DS224 will stream them without any issue over wired or wireless, as long as your network is stable. If you want something with a longer support window and faster hardware, the DS423 is a good middle option, but it is not required for Jellyfin on Shield.
