For home use and movie playback, you don’t need to go too high-end. I’d recommend looking at either the QNAP TS-464 or the Synology DS225+ / DS725+.

The QNAP TS-464 is a great all-rounder. It has 2.5GbE networking, HDMI output, and can handle Plex, 4K playback, backups, and general file storage with ease. You can start with two drives and add more later.

If you prefer a more user-friendly and low-maintenance setup, the Synology DS225+ or DS725+ are solid choices. They use Synology’s DSM software, which is easier to set up and ideal for streaming and backups, though they don’t offer HDMI out like QNAP does.

For a simple home media setup, either a 2 or 4 bay model in these series will cover you well within your budget.
