Installing ROON server on an Asustor AS6704T Gen 2 - markpabbott - 10-21-2025

Guys

I am really struggling to install ROON server on my Asustor NAS. I have had ROON PC client installed fine on my PC, and can access and playback my music folders / files from my NAS without issue. However I want to put the ROON Server APP onto the NAS, rather than use the PC client to playback music.

I have tried getting help from ROON but seem to be going round in circles..

ROON server appears to install OK and then I select the folder library.  Then the app goes back to the set up screen ?

If I install the ROON client on my PC it cannot then find the NAS to connect  to the installed app, even though the NAS it is fully visible in windows explorer.

Are there some fundamentals in ADM that I need to set or check ?

The NAS is on the same LAN as my streamer and PC and I can playback through ROON client on my PC without issue either directly or via streamer.

Help I am so frustrated after multiple installs / reinstalls... any help you guys can give gratefully received..

Tx

Here’s what you should check and try:
1. Shared folder permissions – Make sure the folder where your music is stored (and where ROON creates its database) has full read and write permissions for the “RoonServer” system user. You can check this under Access Control → Shared Folder → Edit → Permissions in ADM.
2. App privileges – In App Central → Installed Apps → Roon Server → Privileges, confirm that Roon has access to your Music folder.
3. Multicast and discovery settings – ROON uses multicast for device discovery. In Settings → Network → Service ensure UPnP, Bonjour, and multicast are enabled on your LAN. Also make sure your router or any switch in between isn’t isolating traffic between wired ports.
4. Firewall – If ADM’s firewall is active, temporarily disable it or add rules to allow ROON ports 9100–9200 (TCP) and 9003 (UDP).
5. Reboot the NAS – After setting the above, reboot the NAS before launching Roon Server again. Sometimes the service fails to bind properly until restarted.

If the issue persists, try installing the ROON Server Docker image instead of the App Central package. The Docker version tends to work more reliably on Asustor systems.

You can follow this setup guide to install it in Docker:
• Install Docker via App Central.
• Pull the steefdebruijn/docker-roonserver image.
• Mount two volumes: one for /app (the Roon database) and one for /music (your music folder).
• Use host networking mode so the PC client can discover the NAS automatically.

This approach bypasses most ADM-related permission issues and matches how ROON Server behaves on Linux systems.
