Connecting Unraid to a Shared Synology Drive - Enquiries - 09-26-2025

Hello again Gentleman -

So since I have the Memini up and running now on Unraid I am looking to have Jellyfin from my Unraid connect to one of my Synology nas's for my TV shows only. I was going to load everything on the Mini but the Tv shows folder is too big and just won't cut it.

They're both on the same local network and I just want jellyfin to connect to the Synology shared folder I designate via Unraid and then when I look at my shows have it stream from the Synology NAS. By chance am I A.) Making sense and B.) how do I begin with this?

Thank you as always!

Rob

On the Synology side, make sure you have a shared folder created for your TV shows and enable SMB (Windows File Services) in Control Panel. Also confirm that the user account you’ll connect with has read (or read/write if needed) permissions for that share.

On the Unraid side, go to Unraid Web UI > Shares > Add Remote SMB/NFS Mount (or use the Unassigned Devices plugin, which is the most flexible way). Enter the Synology NAS IP, select SMB, and add the credentials of the Synology user. This will mount the Synology share as a folder under /mnt/remotes/SHARENAME.

From there, in Jellyfin, add a new library and point it at that mounted path. Jellyfin will then scan and stream the media directly from your Synology NAS over the local network.

Performance-wise, since it’s all on the LAN, the speed is dictated by the network connection between Unraid and the Synology. If both support 2.5GbE or 10GbE and your switch handles it, you’ll have plenty of headroom for streaming. Even on 1GbE it’s fine for multiple HD and even 4K streams as long as it’s direct play.
