NAS - Enquiries - 09-07-2025
I need a home setup for the following:
1. Media centre (i.e. plex server),
2. smart home assistant ,
3. data backup/fall over; and
4. auto photo backup (i.e. one drive)

Option 1: QNAP TS-464
• 4 bays, Intel N5095, HDMI, 8GB RAM
• Great for Plex, Docker, and Home Assistant
• Add 4 x 16TB drives in RAID 5 = 48TB usable
• Cost: ~£500 NAS + ~£700 drives
Option 2: Synology DS923+
• 4 bays, Ryzen CPU (no hardware transcode), very user-friendly
• Best for backups, photo management, and cloud sync
• Add 4 x 16TB drives in RAID 5
• Cost: ~£550 NAS + ~£700 drives
Option 3: TrueNAS SCALE DIY Build
• Build your own using something like the Jonsbo N3/N2 case, ECC RAM, and a Ryzen 5 or Xeon CPU
• Highest performance and flexibility
• Great for running Plex, HA, VMs, and Docker
• Cost: ~£1,200 total (more effort, but very rewarding)
