media server - Enquiries - 03-24-2025 Bought a r630 which only had 2.5inch drives. Was advised to build a nas instead. Looking to have a media server (jellyfin and arr suite), store photos (immich), host docs (next cloud). Need help for mobo+cpu with a bit more power. Using aliexpress for majority of the parts. Will be using a node 804 as that costs the same as a jonsbo. Considering serverpartdeals for the HDD. RE: media server - ed - 03-28-2025 It sounds like you're on an exciting journey building your own NAS and media server setup! Here’s how I’d break down your build to help with the mobo + CPU choices, especially considering you're on a $600 budget and aiming for a 60TB storage setup. Mobo + CPU Selection Since you're looking for something a bit more powerful to handle Jellyfin, the ARR suite, Immich, and Nextcloud, you'll want a solid multi-core CPU with enough power for media transcoding and general server workloads. For budget-friendly but efficient options, here are some solid choices: AMD Ryzen 5 5600G or 5600X – The 5600G offers solid CPU performance with built-in graphics, so you don’t need to worry about a dedicated GPU. If you plan to do some transcoding in Jellyfin, the integrated GPU can help. The 5600X is a little faster and has a bit more power if you need it for tasks beyond media serving. Intel Core i5-11400 – If you prefer Intel, the 11400 offers similar performance and efficiency for tasks like hosting Nextcloud, Immich, and Jellyfin. It's a good middle ground in terms of price/performance. Motherboard Options Since you’re using AliExpress for most parts, here are a few motherboard options that should pair well with those CPUs: ASRock B550M-ITX/ac – This board is compact and supports Ryzen CPUs, plus it comes with integrated Wi-Fi if you need that. It should fit well in your Node 804 case. MSI MAG B460M Mortar – For Intel, the B460 chipset offers solid support for 10th-gen Intel processors like the i5-11400, plus good expandability. Gigabyte B450M DS3H – Another affordable Ryzen option that gives you enough RAM slots and I/O to scale your build over time. Storage Setup (60TB) For storage, since you’re going with ServerPartDeals for your HDDs, I’d recommend looking at Seagate IronWolf or WD Red NAS drives. Both are designed for 24/7 use and RAID configurations, which would be ideal for your setup. If you're doing a RAID setup (which seems like the best option for redundancy with 60TB), you'd likely need 10-12 drives depending on capacity and redundancy (RAID 5/6, etc.). |
