Suggestions for New NAS replacement for 2025 - Enquiries - 03-19-2025

Hello,

I am a home user looking for advice on a new NAS to purchase in 2025.

I currently have an old 8 Bay Synology DS1813+ that I simply use as a storage box as it can't do any heavy processing and I have a newer yet still old 14 bay QNAP TVS-1282-T3 (8x Mechanical, 4x SSDs, 2x M.2 drives).

My goal is to ultimately phase out my Synology DS1813+ or give it to a friend, Set my QNAP TVS-1282-T3 as a secondary NAS and setup a NEW NAS that can do some heavy computing and transcoding as a replacement to my 24/7 Plex server.

I've just ordered 8x Seagate Exos 24TB from ServerPartDeals and would love to hear what you would suggest as a transcoding monster that would have the same 8+ mechanical drives, SSD drives and M.2 drives.

The NAS does not have to be out yet, but it DOES have to be a Desk solution and not a rack solution as I cannot user a rack in my home. A CPU with integrated graphics or a NAS with a GPU slot would be a must. 2.5g, 5g and 10g would be great.

Thank you

Given your budget ($2000–3000 CAD), the TVS-h874 i5 or i7 would likely hit the sweet spot in performance, future-proofing, and desktop form factor. You’ll also have space for SSDs and M.2 drives, making it ideal for tiered storage or caching. Pair it with a low-power GPU later on if your Plex library starts demanding more.
