Synology vs OpenMediaVault - Enquiries - 03-09-2025 I used OpenMediaVault in past on Raspberry Pi 4b with 4TB SSD drive but it’s not ideal to use with MAC. I want to use something like Synology NAS but it’s always seem to be out of my budget. I would appreciate, if you give me your expert opinion on it. Thank you. RE: Synology vs OpenMediaVault - ed - 03-14-2025 If Synology is out of budget, there are a few alternatives that might work better than OMV for Mac compatibility: Used Synology NAS – Older models like the DS918+ or DS420+ can sometimes be found second-hand within budget. They still get DSM updates and offer a great user experience. Asustor Drivestor 2 Pro (AS3302T) – More affordable than Synology but still has a decent UI and macOS-friendly features like Time Machine support. TrueNAS SCALE on a Mini PC – If you’re comfortable setting it up, this gives more flexibility than OMV but with a polished interface. Something like a used Dell OptiPlex Micro with an external drive could work. For £100, options are limited, but if you can stretch it a little, a used Synology or a budget Asustor NAS would be a good fit. |
