For a budget of $300-$400 with at least 4TB of storage and data protection, here are your best options:
Synology DS223 – A solid 2-bay NAS with BTRFS for data integrity. You can start with two 4TB drives in RAID 1 (mirror) for protection.
QNAP TS-233 – A budget-friendly 2-bay NAS with good performance for backups and file storage.
Asustor AS1104T – A 4-bay NAS, allowing you to expand storage later while keeping redundancy.
Since RAID 0 is not an option and data protection matters, I’d recommend a 2-bay NAS with RAID 1 or a 4-bay NAS in RAID 5 (if budget allows).

Thanks for the detailed suggestions! I completely agree that RAID 0 isn’t suitable when data protection is a priority. RAID 1 or RAID 5 makes much more sense, especially for personal or small business use where reliability matters more than speed.
The Synology DS223 with BTRFS sounds great for integrity and backups – definitely leaning toward that option. I’m also intrigued by the Asustor AS1104T for future expansion. Between these, how does the performance and app support compare?
