First NAS - Enquiries - 10-31-2024

Hello!

I am looking to purchase my first NAS but after all the research I still am not entirely sure which one may best fit my needs. I am looking for something that can hold media files mainly comprised of music, voice over, and various video. I am also looking for something super user friendly and something that would have a little bit of longevity in terms of upgrades, mainly in storage.

I've been looking at the Synology vs. UGreen route and have just finished watching your most recent videos on that subject as well. I think one of these two would be a good fit but I am also very open to other options that would fit the above needs. Love your work and hope to hear from you soon! Thanks so much!

Joe

Great to hear you’re diving into the NAS world!

If you’re considering Synology, both the DS224+ and DS423+ are solid options that come with a built-in GPU chip. This is a nice feature if you plan to do any video transcoding or want to run apps that can take advantage of hardware acceleration, which can help with smoother streaming and playback of your media files.

DS224+
User-Friendly: Synology's DSM makes it easy to set up and manage.
Expandable Storage: Perfect for your media library needs, and you can easily upgrade in the future.
DS423+
More Bays: Offers a bit more flexibility with additional drive bays if you think you might expand your storage significantly.
Enhanced Performance: The GPU can help with media processing tasks, making it a great choice for a media server.
Both models are designed with longevity in mind, allowing for upgrades as your storage needs grow. I’d recommend considering how much media you plan to store now and in the future when deciding between them.
