upgrade and back up from DS1813+ - Enquiries - 09-27-2024

hi
I intend to upgrade from from DS1813+ as software upgrade is no longer supported and wonder what unit to purchase next and what long term DISKS are now the best on the market to use. ATA or SSD Synology's support chart is very confusing - are synologys own disks worth the price ?
at prensent i have a total of 8 x 4TB that needs to be backed up and i will need an additional 80 - 200 TB in the end

what would you recommend bying in Synology or is there now a better more reliable option for running plex media server and general back up on the market without totaly breaking the bank

Since you're looking to upgrade from the DS1813+, I would recommend waiting for the upcoming DS1825+, which should be released soon. Synology generally supports their NAS models with software updates for around 10 years, so getting a newer model ensures you’ll have long-term support and security updates.

The DS1821+, while a solid unit, is already a few years old, meaning it won’t have as many years of support left. Waiting for the DS1825+ will future-proof your setup and ensure you get the longest support window available.

For drives, I still recommend Seagate IronWolf Pro or WD Red Pro for their reliability in large NAS setups. If you're considering Synology's own drives, they’re good but may not offer a huge advantage unless you're invested in the Synology ecosystem already.
