Home media NAS - Enquiries - 09-11-2024

I have been struggling with a decision on what to do about NAS at home. Currently I hang aa TerraMaster DAS off my Openmediavalut server. This is not an ideal solution in my mind. One of my main hangups with current NAS offerings is the sheer cost of a frame and OS.

Today I found a vid on the Synology 1522+ While it's more reasonably priced than other options, I don't know if it's the right solution.

Hardware Haven present an alternative in a Lenovo P520. So I don't know if I drop $229.98 for - Lenovo ThinkStation P520 Workstation 1X 3.70GHz W-2135 64GB RAM No GPU/ HDD/ OS. And build my NAS with TruNas or Unraid.

I understand the challenge of finding the right NAS solution for your home setup, especially with concerns about cost and functionality.

Synology DS1522+
The Synology DS1522+ is a solid choice and offers good value for its features. It provides a user-friendly interface, reliable performance, and robust software options. It’s a good middle ground if you're looking for something more reasonably priced compared to other high-end NAS options. However, it’s worth noting that Synology NAS units come with their own operating system and pricing structure, which may still be a consideration.

Alternative: Lenovo ThinkStation P520
The Lenovo ThinkStation P520 is a viable alternative, especially if you’re comfortable setting up and configuring your own system. Here’s why it might be a good choice:

Cost-Effective: At $229.98, it’s relatively inexpensive for the hardware you get, and it allows for a custom setup.
Customization: You can install TrueNAS or UnRAID and tailor the system to your specific needs. Both TrueNAS and UnRAID offer powerful features for managing storage and can be more flexible than proprietary NAS OS options.
Scalability: With the ThinkStation P520, you have more control over future upgrades and expansions.
Considerations
TrueNAS vs. UnRAID: If you prefer a more traditional RAID setup with robust features, TrueNAS is a great choice. If you’re looking for flexibility and easier drive management, UnRAID might be better.
Initial Setup: Building your own NAS with the Lenovo P520 requires a bit more setup and configuration compared to an out-of-the-box solution like the Synology DS1522+, but it offers greater customization.
