TNAS vs Raid 5 - Enquiries - 09-08-2024

I'm new to NAS but not IT in general. I bought a Terramaster F4-423 and dropped 4 12TB drives in. I don't ever plan on using mixed capacity drives so , given this, is there any real benefit to using TRAID vs a RAID 5. I will probably move to TrueNAS or UnRAID in the future, but have 0 experience with them.

Thanks for your question! Given that you’ve set up your Terramaster F4-423 with 4 x 12TB drives and you don’t plan on using mixed-capacity drives, here’s some insight into TRAID vs RAID 5:

TRAID vs RAID 5
TRAID:

Flexibility: TRAID is designed to handle drives of varying capacities, which provides more flexibility if you ever decide to mix different-sized drives. Since you’re using identical 12TB drives, you may not benefit much from TRAID’s flexibility in this case.
Performance and Redundancy: TRAID can offer good performance and redundancy, but traditional RAID configurations like RAID 5 are often more straightforward and tested in terms of recovery and stability.
RAID 5:

Stability and Recovery: RAID 5 is a well-established standard known for its stability and reliability. It provides excellent redundancy and is generally easier to recover from compared to more flexible but less conventional RAID setups like TRAID.
Compatibility: RAID 5 is widely supported and ensures compatibility if you move to other NAS systems or software like TrueNAS or UnRAID in the future.
Given that you’re not planning to use mixed-capacity drives, RAID 5 might be a more stable and reliable choice. Its proven track record in recovery and stability makes it a solid option for your current setup.
