DSM 7.2.2 and Media Server - Enquiries - 08-27-2024

Is Media Server likely to survive future updates, given Synology's new strategy as of DSM 7.2.2?

Thanks!

With the recent changes in Synology’s strategy as of DSM 7.2.2, Media Server, along with the Photos app, Files app, Drive app, and Surveillance, will have transcoding capabilities removed. Video Station is disappearing completely. This means that while these services will continue to work over your local network, they won’t support remote access or streaming that relies on transcoding.

It seems like Synology is moving away from supporting these types of media functions directly on their NAS devices. If remote access or transcoding is important to you, you might need to consider third-party solutions like Plex or Jellyfin, which can still handle these tasks.

Interesting - OK so what video codecs does Synology still natively support?
