Moving to a new country. - Enquiries - 07-04-2024 Hello, I actually already have my NAS system all built up and have been using it for almost two years now. I'm very happy with it. For context my NAS is a Synology DS923+ with 4x14TB drives, with 38.2TB of usable space. My question relates to moving house with my NAS. I'm a USA citizen living in Germany, and I am about to move back to the USA this fall. Is it safe to remove my drives from the NAS while it's packed into moving boxes? Should I remove the drives? I assume that if I remove the drives, I will need to properly label them and put them back in exactly the same slots, is that correct? Thank you very much for your time. RE: Moving to a new country. - ed - 07-04-2024 Removing the Drives: Yes, it's generally a good idea to remove the drives from the NAS enclosure while it’s being packed and shipped. This reduces the risk of damage from potential shocks or vibrations during the move. Reinstalling the Drives: Even if you end up putting the drives back in a different order, Synology’s system should recognize them correctly and rebuild the array without any data loss. However, to avoid any complications and for your peace of mind, it’s a good practice to label each drive and return them to their original slots. Tips for Safe Transportation: Label Each Drive: Use a simple labeling system (e.g., 1, 2, 3, 4) to mark the slots and the corresponding drives. This makes it easier to place them back in the same order. Protect the Drives: Place each drive in an anti-static bag and cushion them well in the packing material to minimize movement and shock. Secure the NAS: Pack the NAS enclosure separately, ensuring it is well-protected with ample padding in the moving boxes. RE: Moving to a new country. - Westicia - 10-10-2024 When you're moving your NAS, it’s smart to take out the drives to keep them safe. Just label 'em so you can stick 'em back in the right spots later. |
