Seawolf Pro 20TB Formatted size - Enquiries - 12-16-2023

My ST20000NT001 20TB drives were formatted NTFS on Windows 11 Pro. Task Manager reports their size as 18.2TB and Disk Management reports 18626.98 GB. Are my reported sizes correct for these 20TB drives?

RE: Seawolf Pro 20TB Formatted size - ed - 12-18-2023

The reported sizes of your Seagate IronWolf Pro 20TB drives are indeed accurate. The difference in reported size is due to the way storage capacity is calculated. In the digital storage world, manufacturers use the base 10 (decimal) system to define storage capacity, where 1TB is equal to 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. On the other hand, operating systems like Windows use the base 2 (binary) system, where 1TB is equal to 1,099,511,627,776 bytes.

Considering this, your 20TB drives, when formatted, will show a lower capacity in Windows due to the different calculation methods. Therefore, Task Manager's report of 18.2TB and Disk Management's report of 18626.98 GB align with these expected differences. Rest assured, your drives are functioning correctly, and the reported sizes are in line with the standard conventions.
