Hi, I'm looking for a nas for 80% personal use at home. Initially I would like to store administrative files (~100GB) and create a Jellyfin media server (or plex in the worst case) with around 1000/2000 films in 1080p and some in 4K (more recent films), as well as around a hundred series in 1080p mostly. I plan within 4 years to have a very efficient 4k HDR television. For the remaining 20%, it's anticipation for my job as a software developer, to store software projects and use a VM (maybe). We would have 2 to 3 users for the media server, not necessarily simultaneously, it depends on the day. The devices on which the media is played are an iphone, ipad, hisense vidaa smart tv and dell pc. A hardware or GPU transcoder would be a plus to avoid having to manage the transcoding myself. I have a preference for Synology and Qnap. I can start with two drives on 4 bays.
When searching for a NAS to serve your needs, considering your current requirements and future plans is essential. For your multimedia demands, the Synology DS423+ stands out as it's Synology's most capable multimedia-supported NAS, catering to your extensive media library. However, if you also value high-speed connectivity, the DS1522+ with its 10GbE port could be an excellent option, although its multimedia capabilities are primarily for local streaming. On the QNAP side, their new 74 series NAS units are pricier but excel in remote transcoding of 4K media. Given your plans for a 4K HDR TV in four years, this forward-looking approach is wise. You can start with two drives on a 4-bay NAS and expand as your storage needs grow.
