Hi,

Firstly just want to say how much i really enjoy watching your youtube videos and i think the content is amazing. Keep up the great work.

Just recently purchased a Synology NAS DS923+ also 4 Seagate Ironwolf pro 12TB drives ST12000NT001 to go inside.

Still not sure if i need to upgrade the memory from the 4GB that it came with to 32GB?

As well if i need to install 2 x m.2 ssd's?

Im trying to future proof the nas now rather then later, before i even begin the whole setup process.

This is my very first NAS setup. Im a complete newb to NAS setups. Purpose is for complete data storage and archiving and to get away from using paid cloud services. Also will be used for all my devices to backup to. Eventually will purchase a second NAS as a backup which will be located offsite. So security is extremely important.

Quite happy to use third party memory and m.2 ssd's but not too sure of what brands to purchase.

Your advise is very much appreciated.

Kind regards,

John.
Thank you for your kind words and support! It's great to hear that you're excited about setting up your first NAS and looking to future-proof your setup. The Synology DS923+ is a powerful NAS model, and with the addition of Seagate IronWolf Pro 12TB drives, you'll have ample storage capacity for your data storage and archiving needs.

Regarding memory upgrade, while the DS923+ comes with 4GB of RAM, upgrading it to 32GB can provide enhanced performance, especially if you plan to run resource-intensive applications or utilize advanced features. You can refer to our list of compatible RAM options for Synology NAS models to ensure compatibility and choose a reputable brand.

In terms of installing M.2 SSDs, it depends on your specific requirements. M.2 SSDs can be utilized for cache acceleration, which can improve overall system performance by caching frequently accessed data. If you anticipate high workloads or heavy file transfers, adding M.2 SSDs can be beneficial. Our guide on the best NVMe M.2 SSDs for caching can assist you in selecting suitable options.

As for third-party memory and SSD brands, it's essential to choose reputable and reliable manufacturers. Some popular brands include Crucial, Kingston, Corsair, Samsung, and Western Digital. Ensure compatibility with your NAS model and consider factors such as performance, warranty, and customer reviews when making your decision.

Considering your goal of data security, it's commendable that you plan to set up a second NAS for offsite backup. This will provide an extra layer of protection and peace of mind. Synology NAS devices offer robust security features, including data encryption, user access controls, and backup solutions.
