I'm a junior devops looking to purchase a NAS for personal use, primarily to store media for Jellyfin and personal NextCloud. I'm considering building a DIY option to gain experience in hardware building and server space. I'm planning on 64TB of redundant storage in RAID 5 and have a budget of $3000. Can you recommend specific components for a DIY option (preferably TrueNAS Core) that will be reliable and offer me enough control to tinker around and learn? Or, alternatively, do you have any commercial products you recommend that would meet my needs?
I would recommend you to have a look at Terramaster products or even Qnap. You will be able to install your own OS on this hardware (Truenas, unraid etc.). We also have videos about this. It will turn out cheaper and more energy efficient than getting a big brand.
