Greetings,
in mid 2015 my Hifi Dealer installed the following NAS
QNAP TS-451 Desktop NAS-System 20TB (4-Bay, 4x 5TB WD Red)
where I keep my HI RES Music files worth plenty of money. That's why it's on RAID 6.Now I'm running out of capacity and my question for you today is : Should I replace the hard drives with bigger ones, or should I go for a complete new NAS because of better CPU performance etc.
Would it also make sense to just get a new one and run both NAS ?
Thanks upfront for your reply, I highly appreciate it.
Best regards
Robert Gmerek
Hi Robert,

It sounds like your music files are very important to you. I'd like to point out that a RAID 6 is a dual parity not a backup. You are still subject to bit rot, theft, fire, catastrophic failure or any number of things that could cause you to lose your data. As your NAS is now 8 years old it might not be a bad idea to upgrade to a new system and use the TS-451 as a proper backup on site or preferably off site. That's just my opinion. Maybe Rob will have another point of view.
