I currently run OMV on ultra SFF PC with main goal to serve as Time Machine backup for 2 Macs. I used to use it for photos, but run out of space and gave up. Main reason of change is energy efficiency (PC has 65W TDP chip) and capacity upgrade (from 1 to 2 TB). Question - is there any reason to opt for DS223 instead of DS220+ (like power consumption, performance, noise, future software support) as price difference is negliglible for me now. I have no needs for media server, cameras nor VMs. Photos plus Time Machine (not eve file sharing). I will install 2x2TB SSDs as noise is very important. Alternative for me is new micro PC with passive cooling and OMV or QNAP 233.

P.S. I used to ask you for business advice (NAS for Video Editing) and it worked out great - we got this QNAP machine (TVS-h1688X-W1250-32G) and did some nice projects using it. Thanks!
The Synology DS223 and the Synology DS220+ are both suitable options for your needs of backing up two Macs with Time Machine, as well as storing photos.

The Synology DS220+ offers more features compared to the DS223, including the Active Backup for Business, which can be useful if you want to backup your business data. The DS220+ also has features such as Hybrid Share, Snapshot Replication, and Virtual Machine Manager, which can be useful if you have more complex storage and backup needs.

However, if you do not need these additional features, the DS223 may be a more suitable option for you, as it has a lower power consumption and TDP compared to the DS220+. Additionally, the DS223 has a lower noise output, making it a more suitable option if you are concerned about the noise level.

Ultimately, the choice between the DS223 and the DS220+ will depend on your specific needs and priorities. If you value a lower power consumption, a lower noise output, and a simple setup for Time Machine backups and photo storage, the DS223 may be a good choice for you. If you need additional features such as backup options and virtual machine support, the DS220+ may be the better option.
