I'm looking for ZFS V2 RAID primarily for backup. Not a lot of I/O and speed not an issue. Get 16 GB ECC DDR4 RAM? Don't bother with NVME SSD or SATA SSD to start?

You could consider Qnap 74 series NAS. This come with ZFS and NVMe slots. You can install an entire OS on these SSD to improve the speed. Or simply go for the cache option.

Otherwise, consider building your own NAS using TrueNAS OS.
