Hi, apologies before I start, I am 80 years old and info takes a little longer to sink in.
Having read all your great info on this subject, I just want to confirm with you that I will initially need a temporary disc in the destination nas (ds220j) to achieve the migration.
Apart from being a SATA disc is there any other spec for this temporary disc.
Cheers and thanks
There's a great how to document that Synology have created:
https://kb.synology.com/en-global/DSM/tu..._and_later

It's got a really handy flow chart that asks simple questions and then recommends the best method for you to upgrade from one NAS to another.

Hope this is helpful.

You could either move your old drives to a new NAS or you can use migration assistant to migrate all data to the new NAS.
You can migrate from desktop to desktop or rack NAS as long as the packages match. And they do most of the time unless you have value series Realtek CPU

Here are groups that allow drive migration between each other in each group.
Package architecture group definitions
Group 1: Armada370, Armada375, Armada38x, ArmadaXP, Comcerto2k
Group 2: Armada37xx, rtd1296
Group 3: Apollolake, Avoton, Braswell, Broadwell, Broadwellnk, Broadwellntbap, Bromolow, Cedarview, Denverton, Geminilake, Grantley, Purley, R1000, V1000, X86

DS211j is very old and not even on the list. So you may need a temporary hard drive. Or if your new NAS come with drives inside, you can copy from one NAS to another directly.

DS211j Marvell Kirkwood 88F6281 Single Core 1 No 88f628x DDR2 128 MB

I hope this helps.
