Hi Rob,

First I would like to say that I find your videos and other online material well thought out and extremely useful. Without it I doubt I would have gotten into NAS storage at all. Thanks!

I ended up buying a DS1621xs+ (in no small part because of your review). I am extremely happy with it.

In these times of COVID I am working from home but I want to set up a solid remote (this will be at our lab/office – a few miles away) backup for the DS1621xs+.

After the initial backup on the local network I would move the backup machine to the office and schedule a backup once a day, late at night (over a VPN connection).

I will not be using that NAS for anything except the backup. Can you recommend a Synology NAS for that?

Thanks, all the best and stay healthy,

Hanan
I would still recommend getting a Synology as a backup NAS too. It is much easier to set up backup schedules. With regards to a backup NAS itself. Any J series NAS will do the job. DS420j with a RAID5 would give you 20TB storage space. You may even skip the RAID part to gain some more space. Using Hyper Backup you can encrypt data transfer. https://www.synology.com/en-global/knowledgebase/DSM/help/HyperBackup/data_backupYou can also compress the data transfers and schedule backups during less busy times like nights. You can also set up VPN to be always on as a second level of protection. Here is how https://www.synology.com/cgi/knowledgebase/findHelpFile/dsm/VPNCenter/1.2/enu/5.2-5644/synology_avoton_415+/100/vpn_setup.htmlI hope this helps.
