I am currently using onedrive (paid subscription) and apple cloud storage services, plus my family do as well
I have also just started using plex as a way to store/view media (films/TV shows etc) and a NAS seems like the logical way to go for the whole family to use and also synch their photos too and not pay a subscription as well
Have mainly looked at synology NAS's due to the software looking easier to manage for my family and am considering a DS220J device, but not sure if I should go for a 4 bay or a 220+ device - There are too many to chose from!!!
Thanks in advance
It can be very confusing to choose the right NAS when there are so many options out there. But there are a few things that can simplify the decision. First of all, you need to check if NAS come with a graphics chip built-in. The transcoding engine will deal with video and audio conversion while the processor can deal with other things like serving files and applications. Without this chip, all heavy work will be done on a CPU and NAS performance will noticeably be effected. The other thing is artificial intelligence and how your media will be organised and filtered. Are there photo GEO location filter, face and object recognition? This is something you can get used to with Facebook photo galleries. And finally the app quality. Are there good mobile app too not just desktop and apps on the NAS itself.DS220j is going to be very slow and in many ways limited. DS220+ / 420+ / 920+ would be the best models to consider.I hope this helps.
